Next Earth, a replica of Earth built on the blockchain, announced that it has donated 330 BNB (around $204,000 USD) to environmental causes from contributions made in November. The donation was made via a voting DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization), in which landowners vote on which charities to donate to. The percentage of each vote corresponds to the percentage of funds that the charity will get.
The recipients of Next Earth’s November donation were Amazon Watch, Kiss the Ground, SEE Turtles, and The Ocean Cleanup. The Ocean Cleanup won the most votes, receiving 493 votes and nearly 200 BNB. Amazon Watch was the runner-up, receiving 215 votes and around 87 BNB, while Kiss the Ground received 56 votes and SEE Turtles received 53 votes.
This is the latest in a series of monthly donations made by Next Earth. In October, Next Earth donated over $64,000 to environmental causes.
Next Earth was created as an NFT-based replica of Earth with a map interface allowing users to browse virtual land tiles for sale. Next Earth is migrating to the Polygon network to decrease gas fees, improve stability and accessibility.
10% of all purchases are donated to environmental causes via the voting DAO. Landowners can vote on which charities receive donations each month, with the percentage of each vote corresponding to the percentage of funds that the charity will get.
The Selected Charities
The winning charity, The Ocean Cleanup, focuses on cleaning up the world’s oceans. The organization was founded by Boyan Slat, a Dutch entrepreneur when he was only 16 years old.
The Ocean Cleanup is using technology to develop a system to passively clean up the world’s oceans. The system consists of a large U-shaped floating barrier that collects debris as it drifts in the water. The barrier is attached to a platform that sits at the surface of the water and serves as a collection point for the debris. Next Earth’s donation will help support The Ocean Cleanup’s efforts to clean up the world’s oceans and prevent further damage to our planet’s environment.
The next charity, Amazon Watch, focuses on defending the rainforest and its inhabitants. Amazon Watch was founded in 1996. The organization is based in Oakland and works in partnership with indigenous communities in the Amazon rainforest to defend their land, forests, and rights.
Amazon Watch has conducted campaigns to oppose the construction of dams, the drilling for oil and gas in the rainforest, and the expansion of cattle ranching into the rainforest. The organization also provides training and support to indigenous communities working to protect their land. Next Earth’s donation will help Amazon Watch continue its work defending the rainforest and its inhabitants.
The third charity, Kiss the Ground, is working to restore soil health. The organization works to increase awareness of the importance of healthy soil for reversing climate change and restoring human health. Next Earth’s donation will help Kiss the Ground continue its work restoring soil health.
The fourth charity, SEE Turtles, focuses on protecting sea turtles. SEE Turtles was co-founded by Dr. Wallace J. Nichols in 2008. The organization works to protect sea turtles through education, advocacy, and conservation programs.
SEE Turtles organizes beach cleanups and nest monitoring programs, educates people about sea turtles and their environment, and advocates for laws that protect sea turtles. The organization also raises public awareness about the threats faced by sea turtles through its website and social media channels. Next Earth’s donation will help SEE Turtles continue its work protecting sea turtles.
The Importance of Blockchain For Good
Blockchain projects are increasingly realizing the importance of giving back to society. Next Earth is just one example of a blockchain project using its technology to support charitable causes.
Next Earth’s donations are made in an effort to help preserve and protect the environment. The company plans to continue donating a portion of its proceeds to environmental causes each month. The blockchain’s ability to facilitate transparent, immutable transactions makes it a perfect platform for supporting charitable causes.
Blockchain projects that are looking to do good in the world should consider how they can use their technology to support charitable causes. Charitable causes can be funded directly via blockchain projects or through third-party charities that are looking for new sources of funding.
